Aussies love utes, we even rewrote the lyrics of “Jingle Bells” and put “a rusty Holden Ute” in it.
But let’s be honest: for most Aussies, the dream isn’t a rusty ute anymore. It’s a shiny new one, ready to tackle both work and adventure.

The BYD Shark 6 is set to make history as Australia's first plug-in hybrid (PHEV) ute, launching in early 2025 with a starting price of just $57,900 plus on-road costs. This ultra-competitive pricing positions it as a game-changer, undercutting key rivals in the 4x4 ute segment.
Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) offer the best of both worlds: a conventional petrol engine for long-distance travel and an electric battery for eco-friendly, short-range trips. Shark's innovative PHEV takes this to the next level with its 29.58kWh BYD Blade Battery, providing up to 100km of range purely in EV mode.
What’s even more impressive? The versatility of charging. You can recharge the battery using the petrol engine while driving (regenerative braking), at public EV charging stations, or conveniently at home with an EV charger.
When you combine a fully charged battery with a full 60L petrol tank, this PHEV delivers an impressive total driving range of up to 840km. Whether you're commuting in the city or hitting the open road, Shark's PHEV ensures a seamless and efficient journey.
Powered by BYD’s DM-O (Dual-Mode Off-road) system, the Shark combines a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine with dual electric motors, producing 321kW and 650Nm. This gives it enough juice to reach 100km/h from a standstill in just 5.7 seconds, faster than the twin-turbo Ford Ranger Raptor!

After six months of rigorous testing on Australian roads, BYD and its distributor, EVDirect, are confident that the Shark 6 is ready to tackle the needs of the country’s most demanding ute buyers. With its blend of innovation and rugged capability, the Shark 6 aims to challenge the dominance of Australia’s best-selling vehicles, the Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux.
In addition to its superior hybrid powertrain that outperforms traditional diesel utes, the BYD Shark 6 boasts a luxurious interior designed for comfort and convenience. Inside, you'll find a cutting-edge 10.25-inch LCD instrument cluster paired with a stunning 15.6-inch rotating infotainment display, offering seamless connectivity with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The leather-wrapped steering wheel adds a touch of sophistication, enhancing the driving experience.
Driver comfort is a priority, with an eight-way power-adjustable seat featuring four-way lumbar support, ensuring a perfect fit for every journey. Both front seats are heated and ventilated, providing year-round comfort no matter the weather.
